Christianity in Japan

The first acquaintance of Japan with Christianity happened much earlier than we might think — in the 16th century. When the Europeans opened this country, many missionaries from Portugal and Spain rushed there. They acted so actively that by the beginning of the 17th century the number of Japanese Christians reached more than three hundred thousand people.
